There’s a certain charm about Greece that lures travellers from all corners of the globe. Its azure waters, golden beaches, ancient ruins, and vibrant culture blend seamlessly to create an experience that’s nothing short of magical. Greece has many islands with estimates ranging from 1200 – 6000, depending on the minimum size to take into account. The number of inhabited islands is variously cited as between 166 and 227. Most of us would think of Athens and Santorini (the most known places) but there are many other islands which are equally beautiful and uncovered. My trip to Greece during the summer of 2009 with friends and colleagues was a testament to this enchanting allure, a journey that took me from the historical heart of Athens to the idyllic islands of Hydra and Poros. A Historic Stroll Through Athens
Step into the enchanting city of Athens, Greece, where the past seamlessly intertwines with the present. Idyllic Hydra Island
From Athens, I took a cruise ship to Hydra, one of the Saronic Islands. It was a refreshing contrast to the hustle and bustle of Athens. Nestled in the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea, Hydra Island is a serene Greek paradise that exudes charm and tranquility. With its car-free streets, picturesque harbor, and stunning natural beauty, Hydra offers a peaceful escape from the bustling world.
1. A Quaint Island Retreat: Hydra Island, located just off the coast of mainland Greece, is a place where time seems to stand still. Its unique allure lies in its preservation of traditional architecture, with stone mansions and narrow cobblestone streets adding to its old-world charm. The absence of cars creates an atmosphere of serenity, inviting visitors to relax and embrace the unhurried island life.
2. Captivating Harbor and Architecture: Hydra’s vibrant harbor, known as Hydra Town or simply “the port,” is a sight to behold. As you wander along the waterfront, you’ll be captivated by the colorful fishing boats, elegant yachts, and traditional tavernas lining the promenade. The architecture reflects the island’s rich history, with beautifully preserved 18th-century stone buildings that house boutique hotels, art galleries, and cozy cafes.

5. Charming Villages and Authentic Cuisine: Beyond Hydra Town, explore the island’s charming villages, each with its own unique character. Kamini and Vlychos offer a more laid-back atmosphere, with waterfront tavernas and scenic walks. Sample traditional Greek cuisine in local tavernas, indulging in fresh seafood, mouthwatering mezedes, and local specialties like amygdalota (almond cookies) and soumada (almond drink).
Paradise in Poros
My final destination was Poros, another gem in the Saronic Gulf. The island’s beauty is surreal, with its verdant pine forests, crystal-clear waters, and charming neoclassical architecture. I took another cruise ship from Hydra to reach Poros. The cruise ride takes approximately one to one and half hour, offering breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea along the way. As you approach the island, you will be greeted by the sight of charming whitewashed houses, cascading down the hillside. Nestled in the Saronic Gulf of Greece, Poros Island is a hidden gem that captivates visitors with its enchanting beauty and serene atmosphere. With its picturesque landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and charming villages, Poros Island offers a delightful escape from the bustling city life. Whether you seek relaxation, adventure, or a taste of Greek culture, Poros Island has something for everyone.
1. Poros Town: Poros Town, the island’s main settlement, is a quaint and vibrant place, perfect for exploring on foot. Its narrow streets are lined with colorful bougainvillea, leading you to traditional tavernas, charming cafes, and local shops. Be sure to visit the Clock Tower, a prominent landmark that offers panoramic views of the town and the surrounding sea.
2. Beaches and Water Activities: Poros Island boasts a variety of stunning beaches, each with its own unique charm. Love Bay and Russian Bay are popular choices for their crystal-clear waters and tranquil atmosphere. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can try your hand at water sports such as snorkeling, kayaking, or paddleboarding. The island’s calm and warm waters make it an ideal destination for both beginners and experienced water enthusiasts.
3. Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi: Situated on a hill overlooking Poros Town, the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi is a place of tranquility and spirituality. Dating back to the 18th century, this beautiful monastery is adorned with intricate frescoes and offers a serene atmosphere for contemplation. Take a moment to soak in the breathtaking views of the island and the sea from this vantage point.
4. Lemon Forest: One of the unique features of Poros Island is its Lemon Forest, a fragrant oasis of citrus trees that stretches across the landscape. Walking through the Lemon Forest is a sensory experience, as the scent of lemon fills the air. Make sure to visit one of the local distilleries to learn about the traditional production of lemon-based products, such as liqueurs and essential oils.
5. Cultural Experiences: Poros Island is steeped in history and culture, and there are several opportunities to immerse yourself in the island’s heritage. Visit the Archaeological Museum of Poros to discover ancient artifacts and learn about the island’s rich history. You can also attend traditional festivals and events that showcase Greek music, dance, and cuisine, allowing you to fully experience the local culture.
Indeed, my trip to Greece was a mesmerising journey through time and beauty. From the historic city of Athens to the idyllic islands of Hydra and Poros, I was constantly in awe of the richness and diversity of the Greek landscape and culture. It was a trip that not only satisfied my wanderlust but also enriched my understanding of ancient history and modern Mediterranean life. Vibrant Athens Nightlife
As evening fell, Athens transformed into a city of vibrant lights and lively music. The nightlife in Athens is as diverse as it is dynamic. From traditional tavernas where locals gather for ouzo and meze, to modern rooftop bars offering stunning views of the illuminated Acropolis, there was an array of options. Gazi, a trendy neighbourhood known for its hip bars and nightclubs, was a particular highlight. The pulsating beats and energetic crowd set the stage for memorable nights.
Sunset on Hydra
After the exhilarating energy of Athens, the serene sunset on Hydra was a tranquil contrast. I found a quiet spot on the harbour and watched as the sky turned shades of pink and orange, casting a warm glow on the stone houses and sparking off the gentle waves. The evening was rounded off with a delicious meal of fresh seafood at a local taverna. The simplicity and beauty of these moments encapsulated the magic of the Greek islands.
Exploring Poros by Bike
On Poros, I decided to rent a bike and explore the island at my own pace. The island’s size makes it perfect for cycling. Pedalling through the winding roads, amidst the scent of pine and the soothing sound of waves, was an experience in itself. I visited the picturesque village of Perlia, the Lemon Forest, and various hidden beaches, each place offering its own unique charm.
Greek Gastronomy
No blog about Greece would be complete without mention of its delightful cuisine. From the rich, layered flavours of moussaka to the simple, fresh taste of Greek salad, every meal was a culinary adventure. I enjoyed the traditional gyros in Athens, the fresh seafood on Hydra, and the local cheese and olives on Poros. The memory of sipping on local wine while enjoying the stunning views will remain etched in my heart forever.
Leaving Greece
As my journey drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the mesmerising beauty of Greece. The country had offered me a rich tapestry of experiences – from the historic grandeur of Athens to the idyllic charm of Hydra and Poros, from the vibrant nightlife to the tranquil sunsets, and from the bustling markets to the serene beaches.
Leaving Greece was bittersweet. The memories of the azure waters, golden sunsets, ancient ruins, and warm hospitality stayed with me, making the farewell a little easier. As I boarded my flight back home, I promised myself to return to this magical country. After all, as the Greeks say, “Όπου αγάπη, εκεί και ευτυχία” – “Where there is love, there is also happiness”. And I had certainly found a love for Greece.
