My Unforgettable Journey to Lepchajagat, West Bengal

4–5 minutes

A Few years back, I had the opportunity to embarked on an enchanting journey to Lepchajagat, a lesser-known treasure nestled in the heart of West Bengal, India. This quaint Himalayan hamlet, located only 19km away from the bustling city of Darjeeling, offered a serene refuge away from my daily urban life.

Lepchajagat is situated at an altitude of about 6,956 feet (2,120 meters) and is nestled amidst the beautiful Eastern Himalayan range. Lepchajagat is known for its serene and picturesque surroundings, making it a popular tourist destination for nature lovers and those seeking tranquility.

The village is surrounded by dense forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron trees, and offers breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world. The area is a haven for birdwatchers as it is home to a wide variety of bird species, including the colorful Himalayan Monal, Rufous Sibia, and many more.

Lepchajagat is also famous for its eco-tourism initiatives, with several homestays and lodges available for visitors to experience the local culture and way of life. The village provides a peaceful and tranquil environment, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. It is an ideal place for nature walks, trekking, and camping. Lepchajagat offers a serene and untouched natural beauty that attracts tourists who seek solace in the lap of nature. It is a wonderful destination to explore the Himalayan beauty and experience the rich biodiversity of the region.

I am writing this blog to share my experiences, complete with details about travel, stay, sightseeing, tourist spots, the best time to travel, and the local cuisine.

**Travel to Lepchajagat

Travelling to Lepchajagat was a journey in itself. I flew into the Bagdogra Airport, the nearest airport to Lepchajagat, well connected with major Indian cities. From there, I hired a taxi for a 3-hour journey to the village. The road trip offered a soothing view of the tea gardens, misty mountains, and the meandering Teesta River. For those who prefer train journeys, New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the nearest railway station.

**Stay in Lepchajagat

Lepchajagat doesn’t have a plethora of luxurious hotels, but it has several homestays and lodges that offer a more personal and authentic experience. I booked my stay at a cozy homestay, which was both comfortable and affordable. My room offered a stunning panoramic view of Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world. The friendly host family added to the charm of the place, making me feel immediately at home.

**Sightseeing and Tourist Spots

Lepchajagat is a paradise for nature lovers. I started my day walking through the dense oak and pine forests, soaking in the tranquillity around me. The village offers a clear view of the majestic Kanchenjunga, especially during sunrise.

A short drive took me to Ghoom, home to the famous Yiga Choeling Monastery, one of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Darjeeling district. I also visited the War Memorial and Batasia Loop, a beautiful garden offering a 360-degree panoramic view of Darjeeling’s landscape.

I also took a day trip to Mirik, a picturesque town located 33km away. The drive through the scenic road was as beautiful as the destination. The serene Sumendu Lake, surrounded by a garden on one side and pine trees on the other, was a treat to the eyes. I also visited the local market, picking up souvenirs and sampling local delicacies.

**Best Time to Travel

Lepchajagat can be visited throughout the year. However, for the best views of Kanchenjunga, October to April is ideal. I visited in June, during the monsoon season. The village was drenched in a different kind of beauty, with a green carpet of vegetation covering the landscape, but the views of Kanchenjunga were often obscured by clouds.

**Cuisine

Being in West Bengal, I couldn’t miss the chance to try the local Bengali cuisine. From the famous “maacher jhol” (fish curry) to “shorshe ilish” (hilsa in mustard sauce), the food was exquisite. The local Nepali population also has its influence on the cuisine. I was treated to ‘Gundruk ko Jhol’ (soup made from fermented leafy greens), ‘Sel Roti’ (a sweet, ring-shaped rice bread), and ‘Thukpa’ (a hearty noodle soup), which were flavorsome and gave a delightful twist to my culinary journey.

**A Trip to Remember

My trip to Lepchajagat was a refreshing break from the fast-paced city life. It was a journey of connecting with nature, indulging in simple pleasures, and enjoying the hospitality of warm and welcoming locals. The sights, sounds, and tastes of this beautiful hamlet left an indelible mark on my memory, making it a trip to cherish forever. If you are looking for an offbeat location to unwind and refresh your senses, Lepchajagat is a destination worth considering.

As I packed my bags to return, I carried along a piece of Lepchajagat’s tranquility, the infectious smile of the locals, the taste of the local cuisine, and a promise to myself to return to this serene hamlet. Lepchajagat, with its pristine beauty and simple lifestyle, is a reminder that the most beautiful things in life are often the simplest.

Travel safe, explore more, and let the beauty of Lepchajagat enchant you on your next holiday!
