The Magic Question: A Simple, Yet Powerful Inquiry I Ask Every Person I Meet

2–3 minutes

One of the most fascinating things about being human is the ability to share, understand, and grow through the exchange of stories and experiences. We thrive on connection, and that connection is often woven through the thread of communication. As someone who meets a myriad of people, there is one question that I invariably ask everyone I encounter, an inquiry that is as simple as it is profound: “What is your story?”

This question may appear to be nondescript at first, almost too broad. But, that’s where its beauty lies. Different from asking “How are you?” or “What do you do?”, it leaves room for the person to share any facet of their life that they may consider significant. It’s an open invitation for them to reveal their world through their own lens, their own narrative.

##Why This Question?

Asking “What is your story?” is a reflection of genuine interest in the person you’re speaking to. It implies that you’re not merely interested in what they do for a living or how they’re feeling at that specific moment. Instead, you’re interested in their journey, their triumphs and trials, their passions and pursuits, their identity and individuality. You are giving them a chance to share their uniqueness, their perspective, and their life experiences.

##The Power of Storytelling

Every person carries with them a collection of stories – tales of their past, chronicles of their present, and dreams of their future. Each story is like a piece of a jigsaw puzzle that, when put together, forms the comprehensive picture of who they are. By asking someone to share their story, you’re giving them the opportunity to share this intricate mosaic, to reveal the layers that form their identity.

Stories have the power to evoke empathy, inspire change, and build connections. They allow us to step into another person’s shoes, to see the world through their eyes. They create a thread of commonality, binding us through shared experiences, emotions, and human conditions.

##The Unexpected Benefits

Asking “What is your story?” isn’t just beneficial for the person answering the question. The listener, too, gains a wealth of knowledge and perspective. You get to understand the person on a deeper level, and along the way, you might discover shared interests, mutual experiences, or gain insights that could help you in your own journey.

This seemingly simple question is also a catalyst for building stronger relationships. By showing genuine interest in someone else’s life, you’re fostering an environment of trust and mutual respect. It opens up the door for a two-way exchange, a healthy dialogue that can, in turn, lead to a deeper bond.

So, the next time you meet someone, instead of resorting to the standard small talk, try asking them, “What is your story?” You might be surprised at the depth of the conversation that ensues. The stories shared might make you laugh, cry, or think. But most importantly, they will bring you a step closer to understanding the intricate tapestry of human experiences, thereby creating a connection that’s truly meaningful.

Remember, every person you meet is an unread book full of stories waiting to be shared. All you need to do is turn the page by asking, “What is your story?”
